Inkululeko carries out its mission of preparing the next generation of South African learners through providing after school programs to those wanting to pursue a higher education, or enter the workforce upon graduation. Inkululeko programs are available for learners from 8th-12th grade.
To make sure these learners are being supported in the best way possible, each program has a designated coordinator to make sure the curriculum is constantly improving and encouraging the learners.
One of the many programs provided for learners in South Africa is Inkululeko’s math program, Olico. Olico’s curriculum is coordinated by Nosi Dosi. Each individual learns at a very different pace, which causes some challenges within the program, but with the support of tutors and coordinators, the learners become motivated by these challenges and they assist in making the challenges easier.
Nosi described this program with an emphasis on the fact that Olico was “designed for learners to work online.” This online format allows for learners to work at their own pace and fully understand the material before moving onto the next topic. When Nosi described the program and how the online forum works, she shared that the assignments online consist of “short videos of a particular topic in math, that the learners watch. After viewing they get tested on the material within that particular topic.
Nosi has noticed that this online format and the content it consists of has provided learners with a “simpler and clear understanding of math.” Instead of the learners feeling like they have to speed through and cram information, they are able to take it at their own pace to ensure the material is being understood.
Although this program has shown success with these learners, this success came through by the perseverance of both the Olico coordinator, Nosi Dosi, as well as the learners who show up.
